CROS stands for Contralateral Routing Of Signal. A microphone on the impaired ear records sound and transfers it to the better ear, which holds the receiver, so sounds arriving on the deaf side can be heard.

What is the difference between CROS and BiCROS?

CROS is for one-sided deafness with normal hearing in the other ear. BiCROS is for one-sided deafness combined with hearing loss in the better ear: the hearing aid on the better ear also amplifies sound for that ear.

Why can’t a normal hearing aid help a deaf ear?

In the event of complete deafness, the sound amplification of a normal hearing aid is insufficient to stimulate the inner ear, so it has no effect on hearing in that ear.

Directional Hearing

Directional Hearing Is No Longer Impossible

When listening with two ears, sound reaches both ears at various volumes and frequencies. This lets the brain work out where a sound is coming from, so a person with normal hearing can easily turn to the source of a sound.

People with one-sided hearing will always hear sound on the side of the better ear. Turning one’s head will not change this, and they find it extremely difficult to concentrate on one sound in loud, busy places, turning a good conversation into an unenjoyable one.

One-sided hearing loss that cannot be helped with a normal hearing aid can be the result of head injuries, tumours (such as an acoustic neuroma) or a congenital impairment.

The microphone records the sound at the impaired ear and transfers it to the better ear, which holds the receiver. This does not affect the better ear’s normal hearing; it lets sounds arriving at the impaired ear be heard, so directional hearing is possible once again.
BiCROS hearing aids
The option for one-sided deafness combined with hearing loss in the other ear. The transmitter on the impaired ear sends sound across, and the hearing aid on the better ear receives it, amplifies it and makes it audible.
