Types of Hearing Aids in Pakistan: BTE, RIC, ITE, CIC and IIC Explained

Quick answer: The main types of hearing aids in Pakistan are BTE (behind the ear, strongest, best for severe loss and children), RIC (receiver in canal, discreet, suits mild to severe loss), ITE and ITC (custom in-ear shells), and CIC and IIC (deep in the canal, nearly invisible, for mild to moderate loss). Most styles come in battery or rechargeable versions. Your audiogram, ear shape and dexterity decide the best type.

What types of hearing aids are available in Pakistan?
Six styles cover almost every patient: BTE, RIC (also called RITE), ITE, ITC, CIC and IIC. They differ in size, visibility, power and how easy they are to handle, not in whether they are 'good' or 'bad'.
Each hearing aid style is a trade-off between power, visibility, comfort and ease of handling; none is simply 'best'. Professional Hearing Solutions, an authorised Signia hearing aid dealer serving Islamabad and Rawalpindi since 1999, fits all six styles from the four brands we dispense: Signia, Rexton, Audio Service and ReSound. We match the style to the audiogram, the ear canal and daily life, which is why every recommendation starts with a hearing assessment.
Types of hearing aids compared (general guide; your audiogram decides)
Style | Visibility | Suits hearing loss | Battery / rechargeable | Good for | Example at PHS |
BTE (behind the ear) | Visible behind the ear | Mild to profound; power and super power models for severe-profound | Size 13 or 675 battery; rechargeable on selected models | Children, severe loss, elderly users | Signia Motion, Signia Prompt, Rexton and Audio Service power BTEs |
RIC / RITE (receiver in canal) | Small, thin wire, discreet | Mild to severe (receiver power chosen to match) | Size 312 battery or rechargeable | Working adults, first-time users | Signia Pure, Signia Orion Charge&Go, ReSound RIC models |
ITE (in the ear, full shell) | Fills the outer bowl of the ear | Mild to severe | Size 13 or 312 battery | Users who dislike anything behind the ear | Signia Insio custom shells, Rexton and Audio Service custom models |
ITC (in the canal) | Partly visible in the ear opening | Mild to moderately severe | Size 312 or 10 battery | Balance of discretion and handling | Signia Insio custom ITC |
CIC (completely in canal) | Very discreet; small pull-cord visible | Mild to moderate, some moderately severe | Size 10 battery | Discretion with steady fingers | Signia Silk, Signia Insio CIC, Signia Intuis CIC, ReSound Key 3 CIC, Audio Service Volta CIC |
IIC (invisible in canal) | Practically invisible | Mild to moderate | Size 10 battery | Maximum discretion, suitable canal | Signia Insio IIC where the canal allows |
What is a BTE hearing aid and who should choose one?
A BTE (behind-the-ear) hearing aid sits behind the ear and sends sound through a tube to a custom ear mould or dome. It is the most powerful and durable style, and the standard choice for severe to profound loss and for children.
All the electronics sit in the case behind the ear, leaving room for a bigger battery, a stronger amplifier and larger controls. Power (P) and super power (SP) BTEs are designed for severe and profound loss, where smaller styles cannot deliver enough sound without whistling. A custom ear mould seals the canal and stops feedback at high volumes.
BTEs are also the first choice for children: the ear mould is remade as the ear grows while the hearing aid stays the same, and parents can see and check it easily. At PHS, the Signia Motion BTE range covers mild to severe loss with Bluetooth and rechargeable options, while Signia Prompt is the entry-level German BTE. Rexton and Audio Service also offer power BTE models at different price points.
Limitation: it is the most visible style, and the tube collects moisture in humid weather. Our comparison of BTE vs RIC hearing aids in Pakistan covers the decision in more detail.
What is a RIC (RITE) hearing aid and why is it so popular?
A RIC (receiver-in-canal) hearing aid places the small speaker inside the ear canal, connected by a thin wire to a slim case behind the ear. It is the most popular style worldwide because it is discreet, natural-sounding and fits mild to severe loss.
Because the speaker sits in the canal, the case behind the ear can be very small, and an open dome lets natural sound in so your own voice does not sound 'boomy'. The receiver comes in different power levels and can be swapped if hearing changes. Most RIC models support direct phone streaming and app control.
At PHS, the Signia Pure range is our main RIC family, in levels 1X, 3X, 5X and 7X, with battery (size 312) and rechargeable versions. ReSound is also known for RIC designs with direct iPhone streaming. The trade-off: sweat and ear canal debris can block the receiver, so regular cleaning and filter changes matter.
What are ITE, ITC, CIC and IIC hearing aids?
These are in-ear hearing aids built into a shell that sits inside the ear. Going from ITE to IIC, each one is smaller and less visible, but has less room for power, buttons and battery.
ITE (in the ear)
A full-shell ITE fills the outer bowl of the ear, holds a size 13 or 312 battery and a button, and suits mild to severe loss. It is the easiest in-ear style to handle.
ITC (in the canal)
An ITC sits mostly in the canal opening: less visible than an ITE, yet large enough for a button.
CIC (completely in canal)
A CIC sits fully inside the canal with only a small removal cord showing, uses a size 10 battery and suits mild to moderate loss. At PHS, options include Signia Silk (ready-to-wear, levels 1X to 7X), Signia Insio custom shells and Signia Intuis CIC, plus ReSound Key 3 CIC and Audio Service Volta CIC.
IIC (invisible in canal)
An IIC sits deep in the ear canal and is practically invisible, which is what most people mean by an 'invisible hearing aid'. It needs a wide, straight enough canal and suits mild to moderate loss only. See our invisible-in-canal (IIC) hearing aids page, or compare CIC vs IIC hearing aids in Pakistan.
Honest trade-off: CIC and IIC models usually lack Bluetooth streaming and rechargeable cells, and are harder to insert with arthritis, tremor or weak eyesight.
Custom or standard fit: what is the difference?
Custom hearing aids are built from an impression of your own ear, while standard (ready-to-wear) devices use soft domes or sleeves in set sizes. Both work well; the right choice depends on your ear canal and degree of loss.
Custom in-ear shells are made from an ear impression taken at the clinic, so they fit your canal exactly. BTEs can also use a custom ear mould, essential for severe loss and children. Standard devices, such as RIC with domes or Signia Silk with soft sleeves, can be fitted the same day.
Rechargeable or battery hearing aid: which is better in Pakistan?
Rechargeable hearing aids are easier for most users because there are no tiny batteries to change, while battery models suit people who travel a lot or have unreliable electricity. Both are good choices when matched to the user.
Disposable zinc-air batteries generally come in four colour-coded sizes: 10 (yellow, CIC and IIC), 312 (brown, RIC and ITC), 13 (orange, BTE and ITE) and 675 (blue, power BTE). Smaller cells last fewer days. All four sizes are widely available in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
A rechargeable hearing aid charges overnight and lasts a full day, a real help for elderly parents who struggle with battery doors. During load-shedding, most chargers run from a USB socket, a power bank or a UPS. Signia offers rechargeable BTE (Motion Charge&Go) and RIC (Pure and Orion Charge&Go); ReSound, Rexton and Audio Service offer rechargeable options on selected models.
Rechargeable vs battery hearing aids
Factor | Rechargeable | Disposable battery |
Daily handling | Place in charger at night | Change a small battery every few days |
Best for | Elderly users, people with poor dexterity or eyesight | Frequent travellers, areas with long power cuts |
Load-shedding | Use a power bank or UPS socket | Not affected |
Styles available | Mainly BTE and RIC | All styles, including CIC and IIC |
What if I can only hear from one ear? (CROS and BiCROS)
If one ear has no usable hearing, a CROS system picks up sound on the deaf side and sends it wirelessly to the hearing ear. BiCROS does the same while also amplifying the better ear if it has some loss.
A conventional hearing aid on a dead ear does not help when there is nothing to amplify. A CROS transmitter on the poorer ear and a receiving hearing aid on the better ear solves this; see our CROS and BiCROS hearing aids page. Sudden loss in one ear needs an ENT doctor first.
What do technology levels and channels mean?
Technology level decides how well a hearing aid handles noise and changing environments. Channels are the frequency bands the sound is divided into for adjustment; more channels allow finer tuning to your audiogram.
Think of channels as bars on a sound equaliser. An 8-channel Signia Prompt suits straightforward loss; 16 to 48-channel devices allow finer shaping and stronger noise handling. Signia levels run 1, 3, 5 and 7: level 1 suits quiet home life, levels 5 and 7 suit busy offices and noisy gatherings.
What does each type cost, and is a German original worth it?
At PHS, German original Signia hearing aids start from Rs.135,000 per unit for the Signia Prompt BTE. Discreet RIC and in-ear models with more channels cost more.

The same model names are sold at very different prices in the market. A German original carries the full manufacturer warranty, genuine parts and a typical lifespan of 6 to 10 years. A Singapore-manufactured first copy is a budget option lasting roughly 1 to 2 years, which PHS discloses openly. Chinese second copies typically last 6 to 12 months; PHS does not dispense Chinese copies. Read our guide to German original Signia vs Chinese copies or browse the Signia hearing aids range.
Kaan ki machine ki iqsam: which hearing aid is best for me?
The best type is the one that gives enough power for your audiogram, fits your ear canal and that you can handle every day. For most adults that is a RIC; for severe loss and children a BTE; for mild loss and discretion a CIC or IIC.
Get a diagnostic hearing test (pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry and tympanometry).
Check the ear canal: narrow, very curved or discharging canals rule out the smallest styles.
Be honest about handling: with weak fingers or eyesight, choose a larger or rechargeable device and bring a family member to the fitting.
Consider local conditions: summer dust and sweat and humid monsoon months call for easy-to-clean designs and a drying box at night.
Choose the technology level for your lifestyle, then try the programmed device in the clinic.
Our audiologists programme every Signia device in genuine Connexx software against your audiogram and fine-tune it at follow-up visits. Frequently Asked Questions
How many types of hearing aids are there?
There are six main styles: BTE (behind the ear), RIC or RITE (receiver in canal), ITE (in the ear), ITC (in the canal), CIC (completely in canal) and IIC (invisible in canal). BTE and RIC sit behind the ear; the others sit inside it. Each comes in several technology levels.
Which type of hearing aid is best for severe hearing loss?
A power or super power BTE with a custom ear mould is usually best for severe to profound loss. It has the strongest amplifier, a larger battery and a sealed fit that prevents whistling. Some severe losses also suit a RIC with a high-power receiver; CIC and IIC styles generally do not.
Is there a completely invisible hearing aid?
The IIC (invisible in canal) style sits deep in the ear canal and is practically invisible to others. It suits mild to moderate loss and needs a wide, straight enough canal, which is checked before taking an impression. If the canal is too small, a CIC or small RIC is the next most discreet option.
BTE vs RIC vs CIC: which should I choose?
Choose a BTE for severe loss, children or if you want the easiest handling. Choose a RIC for mild to severe loss when you want a discreet, natural-sounding device with Bluetooth and rechargeable options. Choose a CIC for mild to moderate loss when discretion matters most and your fingers and eyesight are steady enough to handle a small device.
Are rechargeable hearing aids good in Pakistan with load-shedding?
Yes, for most users. An overnight charge typically lasts a full day, and most chargers run from a USB socket, so a power bank or UPS socket covers power cuts. People who travel to areas with very long outages may prefer battery models. Rechargeable versions are mainly BTE and RIC.
Kaan ki machine kitni qisam ki hoti hai?
Kaan ki machine mainly six types ki hoti hai: BTE (kaan ke peeche), RIC (chhota case peeche, speaker kaan ke andar), ITE, ITC, CIC aur IIC (kaan ke andar, aakhri do almost nazar nahi aatin). Zyada behra pan ho to BTE behtar hai, halke se darmiyane behra pan mein CIC ya IIC. Sahi type audiogram dekh kar hi tay hota hai.
