What happens at your first visit to an audiology clinic?

You will be asked about your hearing, your ears will be examined, and three standard tests will map your hearing. Our audiologists then explain the results and the options, with no pressure to decide on the day.

Professional Hearing Solutions (Pvt.) Ltd has served patients in Islamabad and Rawalpindi since 1999 and is an authorised Signia hearing aid dealer. Its flagship clinic is at Office B-9 Basement, Muhammad Gulistan Khan House 82 East, adjacent to Tehzeeb Bakers, Fazl-ul-Haq Road, Blue Area. All diagnostic tests are done in-house, so a first visit gives you a complete picture of your hearing in one sitting. You can read about each test on our hearing assessment page.

Many first-time patients feel nervous, or have been brought by family who have noticed the problem before they have. That is normal. None of the tests hurt, and nothing goes deep inside the ear. The aim of the first visit is understanding: what type of hearing loss you have, how much, and what will help.

What is the step-by-step timeline of a first visit?

Arrival and registration, case history, ear examination, PTA, speech audiometry, tympanometry, results, then a listening demonstration if a hearing aid is recommended. The fitting itself is usually booked as a separate appointment.

Your first visit at PHS Blue Area, step by step

Step

What happens

Why it matters

1. Arrival

Registration and a short wait; bring your previous reports

Old audiograms let us compare and see whether hearing has changed

2. Case history

Questions about when the problem started, noise exposure, ear infections, medicines, tinnitus and daily listening needs

Guides which tests matter most and flags anything that needs an ENT doctor

3. Ear examination (otoscopy)

A light is used to look at the ear canal and eardrum

Checks for wax, infection or a perforation before testing

4. Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)

You wear headphones and respond each time you hear a tone, from low to high pitch, in each ear

Produces the audiogram: the map of your hearing

5. Speech Audiometry

You repeat words heard at different levels

Shows how clearly you understand speech, not just whether you hear sound

6. Tympanometry

A soft probe briefly changes pressure in the ear canal

Tests how the eardrum and middle ear move; helps detect fluid or pressure problems

7. Results explained

Our audiologists explain the audiogram to you and your family

You understand the type and degree of loss and your options

8. Listening demonstration

If a hearing aid is recommended, you hear suitable models in the clinic

You experience the difference before any decision

9. Fitting appointment

The chosen device is programmed with genuine Signia Connexx software to your audiogram

Correct programming is what makes a hearing aid sound natural

Allow unhurried time for the visit, and ask the team how long to plan for when you book, because timing depends on whether you are coming only for tests or also want to discuss hearing aids in detail. Test fees are confirmed when you book. Call 0332-5014111.

What should you bring to your first hearing test?

Bring any previous audiograms or ENT reports, your current hearing aids with their charger or batteries, a list of your medicines, and a family member who talks with you daily.

  • Previous audiograms and ENT reports: even old ones help show whether your hearing has changed.

  • Current hearing aids: bring them with the charger or spare batteries, so we can check them and read their settings.

  • A list of medicines: some medicines can affect hearing or cause tinnitus.

  • A family member: a familiar voice is useful during discussions, and they will support you during adaptation.

  • Reading glasses: helpful for reading the audiogram and any paperwork.

  • Your questions: write down the situations that are hardest for you, such as family gatherings, TV, phone calls or the mosque.

Do not push cotton buds into your ears before the visit. If an ear feels completely blocked, or you have pain or discharge, tell us when booking; it may need medical attention before testing.

What do the results of a hearing test mean?

The audiogram shows the softest sounds you can hear at each pitch. Together with speech and middle-ear results, it tells us the type and degree of your hearing loss.

Hearing loss is described by type (sensorineural, conductive or mixed) and by degree (mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe or profound). A person can have normal hearing for low pitches and a loss for high pitches, which is why many people say they 'hear but cannot understand', especially in noisy rooms. Our types and degrees of hearing loss article and the audiogram and hearing test guide explain this in detail.

If the results suggest a medical cause, such as fluid behind the eardrum, a perforation or a one-sided loss, our audiologists will recommend an ENT review first. If the loss is the kind that hearing aids help, they will explain which styles fit your audiogram, ear shape and daily life.

Will you be asked to buy a hearing aid on the first visit?

No. You leave with your results and a clear recommendation. Many families prefer to discuss at home and return for the fitting.

When a hearing aid is recommended, you will hear suitable models in the clinic and receive a written quotation that states whether the price is per unit or per pair and whether the device is a German original. PHS dispenses Signia, Rexton, Audio Service and ReSound, and does not dispense Chinese copies. German original Signia hearing aids start from Rs.135,000 per unit.

Prices are indicative and may change with market fluctuations, inflation and exchange rates. Call 0332-5014111 for a written quotation based on your audiogram.

For price ranges by style and a guide to choosing, read our hearing aids in Islamabad guide.

What happens at the fitting appointment?

The hearing aid is programmed to your audiogram with manufacturer software, fitted to your ear, and you are taught how to use, clean and charge it. Fine-tuning visits follow.

  1. The device is connected to genuine Signia Connexx software (or the manufacturer software for other brands) and set to your audiogram.

  2. The fit is checked for comfort, and domes or ear moulds are chosen.

  3. Sound is adjusted while you listen to voices in the room, including a family member's voice.

  4. You learn to insert, remove, clean and charge the device, and to change wax guards.

  5. A follow-up visit is booked, because the brain needs a few weeks to adapt to sounds it has not heard clearly for some time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the timings of Professional Hearing Solutions?

Both clinics, in Blue Area, Islamabad and on Saidpur Road, Rawalpindi, are open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and closed on Sunday. On public holidays, call 0332-5014111 to confirm before travelling. Booking ahead is recommended so an audiologist and the test room are ready for you.

Does a hearing test hurt?

No. Pure Tone Audiometry and Speech Audiometry only ask you to respond to tones and words through headphones. Tympanometry uses a soft probe at the entrance of the ear that briefly changes air pressure; you may feel slight pressure, similar to a lift or aeroplane. Nothing is pushed deep into the ear.

How long does a first visit to the audiology clinic take?

It depends on whether you are coming only for tests or also want to discuss hearing aids and hear a demonstration. Allow unhurried time and ask the team how long to plan for when you book on 0332-5014111. Avoid booking the visit just before another commitment.

What should I bring to my hearing test in Islamabad?

Bring previous audiograms and ENT reports, your current hearing aids with charger or batteries, a list of medicines and your reading glasses. A family member who speaks with you daily is very helpful during the results discussion and later during adaptation to a new hearing aid.

Where exactly is the PHS clinic in Blue Area?

The clinic is Office B-9 in the basement of Muhammad Gulistan Khan House 82 East, adjacent to Tehzeeb Bakers, Fazl-ul-Haq Road, Blue Area, Islamabad. Tehzeeb Bakers is the easiest landmark to give a driver. WhatsApp 0332-5014111 for a location pin.

How much does the first hearing test cost?

Test fees are confirmed when you book. Call 0332-5014111. The first visit includes the tests your audiologist considers necessary, typically PTA, speech audiometry and tympanometry, along with an explanation of the results and your options.

Can I bring my old hearing aid to the first visit?

Yes, please do. Our audiologists can check whether it still suits your current hearing, read its settings if it is a brand we service (Signia, Rexton, Audio Service or ReSound), and advise whether reprogramming, repair or replacement makes more sense.
